besides learning to shoot and not stand still, I thought we could offer new players some general advice to perform better, especially in pvp. I can add these to one big list and separate into classes in the OP if there are enough meaningful replies.

Preparation

1. Change your device keybinds. If you have a mouse with side-buttons take advantage of these. my current layout is 1 - 2 - 3 and then the devices are Mouseforward-Mouseback-F. My boost is 5 so I don't mis-press it and E is my beacon button. Neonphades recommends moving the score page from TAB.

2. Remove mouse acceleration in windows and mouse smoothing in game Go to your control panel and click on "hardware and sound", click "mouse" then go to "pointer options". Uncheck "Enhance Pointer Precision" and then where it says "Select a Pointer Speed" move the slider to the six notch on the slider if it isn't there already and then save.

3. If your mouse skills (aiming) are poor, play Osu! Osu! is a game that requires precise mouse moving and clicking to the tune of music that will help improve your ability to aim,

4. Unfortunately, ping can be a factor in your success, you may have to consider device choices based on your lag. If you are shooting with a "tracking" weapon a ping of 40 means that you have almost no "lead" in your shots, where as with 100 you may have to aim in front of a moving target. The amount you lead scales with your ping, and at one point or another it becomes difficult to consistently hit your target. Aussies have 30 ping, they are just bad. JK

5. Read your class forum, especially the guides.[i] One of the biggest issues faced by new players is inneffective item and skill selection. In 1.4 the class trees changed, so make sure you aren't reading old information! Some of the most basic and common skill trees are as follows, although you should experiment and suit yours to your playstyle:

    Assault - Tank: 1/9/3
    Assauilt - Roamer 1/5/7
    Assault - AoE 1/5/7
    Medic - Healing (Bio-feedback beam)- 6/7/0
    Medic - Healing (Nanite) - 6/7/0
Medic - Poison (1)/x/8 - place the last four as you see fit
    Recon - Sniper 5/0/8
    Recon - Bombcon 0/6/7
    Robo - Double Turret 3/7/3
    Robo - Single Turret 5/8/0
Robo - Drone - too many options 1/0/12, 4/0/9, 5/0/9. Focus on either drone skills or gun skills.

6. Check out some merc vids.
    Robo - Magicandybar
    Assault - CaerusX
    Medic - Anaakin

7. Playing every class will make you a better player. I played recon exclusively till level 40ish, and regretted it. If you learn other classes' abilities you will be better at countering them. Play healing medic as well to get a better understanding of their cooldowns and healing ability, it will give you a better understanding of when to fight and when to flee. Furthermore, there is constant debate between the easiest classes to play, some say turret robo, bomb-con or healing medic but each presents a new set of challenges and skills. Find what you are most comfortable with and ride that until you have a better understanding of the game.

8. Use armor with the most Ns (health) and Rs (Ranged prot) you can get. Try to get rid of every B and M you can. At level 20 get full rare armor and mods it with full rare mods. At level 30 consider buying the NNR armor from Hawks with your tokens and put epic mods on it.

9. Use the Virtual Reality Arena to test weapons and builds. Even though you have to face players above level 30, the VR is a good place to test builds and weapons while you are queued or getting ready to merc. It can be found in the Transportation section off of the central hub in the dome.

10. Join an agency. Try to join an agency with a coherent mission statement and goal. Don't be afraid to ask questions to the recruiter. Even new agencies should have standards. Don't join any agency that is randomly inviting people, they are usually less organized. Get a mic, and make sure they have voip (mumble is most popular in GA).

11. Buy a booster when you hit 30, but not a moment before. Take your time to learn the classes and how to handle a jetpack in lowbie merc, above 30 is a different game. With that said, obtaining tokens takes quite a while without booster, especially if you aren't getting 15k a week from ava, I do recommend getting at least a 15 day some point, its an especially nice boost if you are leveling through PVE.

12. When you hit 30+ merc check your percentiles amongst the playerbase at Agendastats.com As a ranking system, agendastats allows you to compare your kills/damage/healing/objective points to your peers, giving you the ability to see where you are doing well, and where you are following short relative to others.

13. If you are new to AvA the following threads (amongst others) are a good idea to take a peak at for ideas on strikeforce class balance and tactics:
Sansa's AvA guide for new players
    Aexrael's Foundation of a Strikeforce
    VOldis' video comilation
There are many other worthy guides - too many to post. If you are an officer or strikeforce leader then reading the forums is practically a must. Post 1.4 the best comps would be 4 assaults, 4 medics and either 2 recons and 1 robo or vice-versa. I recommend using a bomb-con and a sniper to scorpia pain gun targets. There are also many helpful people waiting to assist you, don't be afraid to ask in city.

Tactics

1. Don't be afraid to REST in pvp Especially if you are a recon and have bionics, rest is pretty easy to use. You might suggest that 10 seconds and power loss isn't much better than dying, but you want to save your BOOST. HOWEVER, be aware, rest applies a debuff so you take increased damage and are an easy kill if not crafty. It is worth it however, if you stay alive you get more shatters, bubbles, smashes and healing, which can easily win you a point.

2. Place shatters on roofs and walls It is very easy to both escape or place walls and domes around shatters to prevent them from taking out nests. Get creative with your shatter placement and you can catch players unawares. Also this can be construed as advice to robos to block those bombs

3. Don't sit on point (and/or expect heals) if turrets are going up around you. More players on point does not make it cap faster! The easiest way to capture a point is if the enemy is dead or scattered. Sitting on point while robos nest up around you will lead to a team wipe. The medics will not want to keep healing you if you play too passively, even if you are a point tank.

4. If you are stealth or in Perfect Target you cannot capture a point! If you are low on health and using one of these abilities you are better off resting and running away because the point attracts enemies.

5. This game is about movement. Whether you are a medic or a tank assault, you must be constantly moving and aware of what is around you. Standing stationary on point will only get you killed from behind. Robos should be building and rebuilding, snipers putting themselves in position to not miss, assaults taking out turrets and robos around the objective and medics thrusting up and around to avoid fire.

6. If you are the only one alive don't attack the point alone. You will probably die. In AvA teams often engage if they get at least one person down, on a roof or away from the point, the loss of a healer or damage class can easily sway the battle.

7. If an enemy with low health is far away or fleeing use your smg. It has greater range and accuracy for assaults, as such the Rhino SMG may not be the best choice of smg.

8. This isn't call of duty, if you are a sniper don't crouch, strafe. A crouching sniper is an easy target for other snipers. Furthermore, learn to shoot with bionics in sniping battles.

9. Make Robo nests your priority This is not the "recon's job," if everyone focuses, they go down quick. If the robo is very squishy you can attempt to kill him first, but generally you will find that you have to take out his med-crate. With this accomplished, kill the robo and then the turret. Recons - never throw bombs and run away. It does nothing, finish off the job.

10. Kill players attacking turrets. Robos: YOU CAN KILL THE PERSON ATTACKING YOUR TURRET. If you cooldown is up you don't always need to save it, killing the attacker and putting down a new one works. A meleecon slashing at the back of a turret is an easy kill. For everyone else: any medics healing someone taking out a nest is particularly vulnerable as they don't want to stray too far from the task at hand. If a robo still has his medcrate and/or power station up, standing in them to take out enemies attacking the nest gives you the upper hand.

11. If a good assault is being pocketed by a medic, focus the medic. The assault will be very tough to kill, but 2-3 people shouldn't have too much trouble with the medic. This tandem will be very powerful, as an assault with a medic will crush robo nests. If they are farming kills away from the objective, ignore them, just be careful if you are out there alone.

12. Manage your power wisely. Medics: don't heal targets at full health. Assaults: Right click when you can and bring powerstim. Robo's dont heal your turret unnecessarily. Recons: lolbionics.

13. Don't use perfect target. It makes you a worse player and doesn't help the team. Chances are you won't get healed up while in it. If you need, bring two shields and run Aegis.

14. If you are a medic make obtaining a second profile a priority. Being able to switch between healing and poison depending on the number of other medics can help a team a lot. Make sure you communicate.
